Do You Know What Your Auto Extended Warranty Covers?

Does It Cover What Your Insurance Can Cover?

Adam was elated to purchase his first car on his own. With just over 100,000 miles, he felt the 2001 Volvo SE was the perfect purchase for his current situation. He had just graduated college, turned 23 and was ready to make his mark on the professional world. The future was looking bright.

Unfortunately, the old Volvo had other plans. Barely a year into his 72 month note and with a quote for $2300 in needed repairs, Adam was bumming rides from his 18 year old roommate who’s Vespa created a situation some may consider a little too close for comfort.

All Too Common

Obviously, situations like this are all too common, but a little knowledge about the benefits of purchasing an extended auto warranty might have livened Adam’s circumstances up just a bit. An extended warranty can help make sure that your car doesn’t turn from prized possession to devastating money pit.

Know Before You Purchase

While, an extended warranty may be purchased at the time you buy your vehicle, or in some cases much further along in your ownership experience, it’s imperative to understand what your extended warranty covers and if your already purchased insurance includes similar coverage.

Several questions to ask before buying include:

  • Does this vehicle already include coverage and to what extent?
  • Does this coverage coincide with the length of time I plan on owning this vehicle?
  • What’s this car’s reliability history?
  • Who is “backing” this extended warranty?
  • What are the deductibles?
  • Can I transfer the warranty upon selling the vehicle?
  • Does this extended warranty allow me to have the vehicle repaired wherever I choose?
  • What are the coverage specifics?
  • Would I have to pay cash before getting the repairs, and then be reimbursed?
