Deceitful Car Salesmen Tactics | Bennett Law Firms

Avoid being tricked by a car salesman and his or her low-ball/high-ball trade-in tactics; do your research before you step onto a car lot.  There are several internet sites that provide information as to the approximate value of your trade-in and improve your ability to negotiate a fair price.

A car salesman will never offer you what you could make if you decide to sell your car yourself; however, you should still expect to receive a fair price that is in line with what your research indicates you should receive.

Resources to Review

Some of the websites you might want to consider to determine your car’s value include:

  • Kelley Blue Book
  • Edmunds.com
  • NADA Guides

It is also important to remember that you need to negotiate the price the dealer is willing to give you for your trade-in prior to negotiating the price of the car you plan to purchase.  Keeping these transactions separate during your negotiations will ensure that you are getting the best deal.

Understand that the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is in place to ensure the dealership and the salesman benefit as much as possible. Even though a dealer may attempt to make you think that simply because they offer the car for a lower price than the MSRP, they are already giving you a great deal, know this is not true.  There have even been instances where a car salesman will make a sales pitch stating that the dealer’s price is only going to provide a very small commission for them and there is no way they could possibly go any lower; this is absolutely false.  There is always a tremendous mark-up on all vehicles. Dealers and their sales force would not stay in business if they were losing money, so you never have to be concerned that you are cheating someone out of a well-deserved commission by negotiating the best price for yourself.
